Clyde Neilson, 93, Lyndon: Dec. 5, 1919 – June 30, 2013

LYNDON – Clyde Neilson, 93, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Baldwin Retirement, Baldwin City. He lived his entire life in Osage County, mostly in the Lyndon and Vassar communities.

Clyde was born on Dec. 5, 1919, on a farmstead east of Osage City. Because of a snowstorm, the doctor had to arrive by train. Clyde was the oldest of four children born to John and Marie Goldsmith Neilson.

In his teenage years, Clyde worked for Bill Shaw, who taught him a lot about farming. This learning experience led Clyde to become a farmer and a successful one at that. Having had only eight years of formal education, Clyde was mostly a self-educated man and was skilled in many ways. He built their farm home southwest of Vassar and a “jeep” for the grandchildren. Solving math problems came easy to Clyde. He will be remembered for being a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and for the wealth of history he possessed about families in and around the Lyndon and Vassar communities.

Clyde married Lucille Miller on March 22, 1941, in Lawrence. They shared 67 years of marriage until Lucille’s death on Jan. 2, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Virginia Huffman, and a brother, Ludell Neilson.

Clyde is survived by his two daughters, Connie (Chuck) Coffman, Lenexa, and Phyllis (Gary) Knight, Lawrence; a brother, Arlie Ray Neilson, Scranton; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Clyde will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, at the Feltner Funeral Chapel in Lyndon. Burial will be in the Vassar Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS. 66451.
