Round robin contest features county’s top livestock showmen

The ultimate goal for many 4-H livestock exhibitors at the Osage County Fair each year is to qualify for the round robin contest. Each individual livestock show includes a showmanship contest. Winners of the intermediate and senior age divisions of each species’ showmanship contest qualify for the round robin.

During the round robin, each showman must show animals from each of the divisions – horse, sheep, swine, goat and beef – to determine the best overall showman of the fair.

Winners of the 2013 round robin contest, held July 12 at Osage City, were: Senior division, Paige Pearson, Willing Workers 4-H Club, grand champion, and Brandon Stahel, North Osage 4-H Club, reserve grand champion; and intermediate age division, Evan Tomlinson, North Osage 4-H Club, grand champion, and Peyton Pearson, Willing Workers 4-H Club, reserve grand champion.

During showmanship, members are judged on their preparation of animals for the show, the apparent training of their animal for show, and the appearance and behavior of the showmen. Good 4-H showmen make their animal more presentable to the judge by having good skills and a well-trained animal. Conformation of the animal is not considered by the judge during showmanship contests, but grooming and fitting of the animal is.  Judges look for showmen who have animals that are responsive to handling. Well-trained show animals are the result of the 4-H member’s many hours of hard work at home.

To prepare for the round robin, 4-Hers work together to learn how to show the animals they normally do not work with. By doing so, they learn to communicate with one another, meet other 4-Hers and work with them, and learn something new. Becoming a champion in round robin is truly a crowning achievement for a 4-Her.
