OCHS cheerleaders attend camp to prepare to boost school spirit

OCHS 2013-14 cheerleaders attended a summer cheerleading camp at Emporia State University, earning several team and individual awards, and preparing for the upcoming school year.

Osage City High School cheerleaders attended the National Cheerleaders Association camp at Emporia State University this summer, earning a coveted team award and recognition for the team’s coach, in addition to several team and individual awards.

Team awards included the Spirit Stick Award, which was presented to the team for displaying genuine spirit all week long. The Spirit Stick Award is the most coveted award at all NCA camps across the country and has been a part of the NCA tradition for over 50 years.

The team also won the Spot Award, which is given for excellent technique in safety, spotting and stunts throughout camp. NCA commended the team as winners of this award for their outstanding commitment to keeping safety their No. 1 priority. Osage City’s team was also recognized for the top team performance, for exemplifying best voice projection, motion technique and ability to lead the crowd.

Individuals who won awards:

  • Maren Peterson was named an All-American Cheerleader nominee for displaying excellent skills in six categories – motions, jumps, tumbling, stunt, dance, and leadership.
  • Keisha Branine was an America Needs Cheerleaders recipient. Keisha was recognized for impacting others around her with her actions, demonstrating leadership, spirit, commitment, kindness and motivation, and being an example of the values that cheerleaders represent and why America needs cheerleaders.

Also during the camp, OCHS’s cheerleading coach, Kylie Baxter, was honored as the outstanding rookie coach.

The camp was held June 28-July 1.
