Raymond “Lefty” Stephenson, 101, Scranton: Sept. 22, 1919 – Feb. 15, 2021

SCRANTON, Kan. – Raymond Duane “Lefty” “Steve” Stephenson, Scranton, Kan., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 15, 2021, at the young age of 101. Raymond was born Sept. 22, 1919, in Logan, Kan., to parents, Fred Virgil Stephenson and Cora Mae Buss. He was one of nine children and grew up in the Woodruff and Norton area of western Kansas.

Lefty graduated from eighth grade and had to go to work to help his family. He was drafted by the U.S. Army in February 1941 and served 4 1/2 years during WWII, where he was in five major battles. He returned to Norton to raise his family.

He was married in June 1941 to D. Galene Stephenson.

He was a member of the American Legion, in Norton, and was a committeeman for the Republican Party, in Scranton. He had a long career as an auto collision repair manager until his retirement in April 1986. Lefty was an avid hunter and fisherman, and played farm club baseball until he was 36 years old.

Survivors include his son, Rex Stephenson, Salem, Ore.; daughter, Dana Stephenson Webber, Scranton; son, Terry Stephenson, Scranton; son-in-law, Jan Martin (Cherry); grandchildren, Edye Freund (Ryan) Carbondale, Kan., Kyle Martin (Denise), Salina, Kan., Kayla Lonnon (Dane), Hays, Kan., Kristin Martin Smith, Ogden, Kan., Shane Stephenson, Johnstown, Colo., Angel Crisanti (Vincent), of Kansas; 23 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by all of his siblings; parents; wife; daughter, Cherry; and son-in-law, Darryl Webber.

Mr. Stephenson will be cremated and no visitation will be held. A celebration of life ceremony will be announced at a future date and will be held at Topeka Baptist Church, Topeka, Kan.
