Betty Mae Schrader, 86, Osage City: Jan. 5, 1935 – June 21, 2021

OSAGE CITY, Kan. – Betty M. Schrader, 86, passed away Monday, June 21, 2021, at her son’s home in Osage City, Kan. Betty Mae Speakman was born Jan. 5, 1935, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to Luther Merle and Helen Lucille (Pantzer) Speakman.

She was raised from the age of three years old by her maternal grandmother, Hattie Pantzer, in Burlington, Colo., until the age of 13. She then lived with her mother and the man she knew as Daddy, Charles Evans, in Goodland, Kan.

Betty met Wayne Dale Schrader, of Osage City, on a blind date in Brewster, Kan. They married, and to that lifelong union they raised six children, Vickie Lynn, Wayne Dale Jr., Pennie Lou, Cindy Lea, Linda Sue and Edward LeRoy.

Betty and Wayne lived in Spokane, Wash., and Chicago, Ill., while Wayne was an Air Force mechanic. They settled in Osage City in 1966. Betty worked for Hallmark Cards for many years and had many lifelong friends. Her retirement years were spent with Wayne, and after his passing she lived with her son, Ed.

Betty is survived by daughters, Cindy Sharpe, Gypsum, Kan., and Linda Robertson, Osage City; son, Edward Schrader, Osage City; 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and a great-great-great grandchild; many beloved nieces and nephews, and very loving companion, Pepe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Sr., and three children, Pennie, Wayne Jr. and Vickie.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, Osage City. Burial will follow at Osage City Cemetery. Family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday, June 25, at the funeral home.
