Osage County deputy intercepts holiday cheer; 185 lbs. of pot found in traffic stop

Somewhere on Thanksgiving there were some pot smokers who were more wistful than thankful after the Osage County Sheriff’s Office intercepted a 185-pound load of marijuana on Interstate 35 the day before the holiday.

In a press release, Osage County Sheriff Chris Wells reported that around 2:06 p.m. Nov. 24, 2021, an Osage County Sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop at milepost 160 on I-35 for a traffic violation. During the stop, 185 pounds of marijuana were found in the vehicle and seized.

The driver of the vehicle, Bounmy Phongsavat, 40, of Milwaukee, Wis., was taken into custody and transported to Osage County Jail on charges of suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.


The sheriff’s office also issued reports on other recent unrelated narcotics arrests:

At 4:45 p.m. Nov. 29, 2021, an Osage County Sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop at Sixth Street and Cedar Street in Lyndon, Kan., for a traffic violation. During the stop, a K-9 was deployed and illegal narcotics were located.

The driver of the vehicle, Dalton D. Pabst, 28, of Pomona, Kan., was arrested on charges of suspicion of driving without a valid license and possession of methamphetamine.


At 2:34 p.m. Nov. 22, 2021, an Osage County Sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop at milepost 159 on Interstate 35 for a traffic violation. During the stop, a K-9 was deployed and illegal narcotics were located.

The driver of the vehicle, Curtis W. McCammon, 42, of Waverly, Kan., was arrested on charges of suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and an Osage County arrest warrant.


At 12:01 p.m. Nov. 4, 2021, an Osage County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Interstate 35 near milepost 162 for a traffic violation. The vehicle failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit came to an end at milepost 198 near Wellsville after tire deflation devices were used and the vehicle came to a stop. Narcotics were subsequently located and the vehicle was found to be listed as stolen.

The driver of the vehicle, Jesus A. Alejos-Reyna, 21, of Kansas City, Kan., was arrested on charges of suspicion of possession of stolen property, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and felony flee or attempt to elude law enforcement.

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Ottawa Police Department, and Wellsville Police Department in this case.
