SCRANTON, Kan. – Richard L. Henderson, 80, of Scranton, Kan., passed away Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, at the University of Kansas Health System, Saint Francis Campus, Topeka, Kan. He was born Sept. 5, 1941, in Harveyville, Kan., the son of Clarence and Lela (Spidell) Henderson.
He grew up in Harveyville, and graduated from Harveyville High School, class of 1959.
Richard worked for Conroy Construction, Scranton. He worked for the city of Scranton from 1981 to 2006, retiring while in the maintenance department.
He married Barbara Scarbourgh, Dec. 15, 1975, in Osage City, Kan. They shared more than 42 years of marriage before her death in 2018.
He enjoyed fishing at the Osage County Fishing Lake and camping with his wife, Barbara. He loved spending time with his family, and will be remembered for his humor and being a jokester.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara; a sister, Betty Payne; and a granddaughter, Randi Crosby.
Surviving family includes three daughters, Lela Henderson, of Scranton, Laura Marshall, Carbondale, Kan., and Ruth Benton and her husband, Dana, Scranton; a son, Marty Marshall, Topeka, Kan.; a sister, Dorothy Perkin, Detroit, Mich.; and eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
To celebrate Richard’s life, a memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at Cross Road Community Church, 512 Mason St., Scranton. Inurnment will follow at Harveyville Cemetery, Harveyville.
