U.S. 56 resurfacing project to begin in Osage, Lyon counties

Update: Start date changed to Tuesday, Sept. 3.

On Tuesday, Sept. 3, a resurfacing project will begin on a 28-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 56 from the Lyon/Morris county line east to the state Highway 31 intersection in Osage County. The project had been scheduled to begin Aug. 26.

Project work includes a chip seal application over all existing mainline lanes followed by all new pavement markings. The resurfacing project will smooth the road and fill surface defects that can shorten pavement life. Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.

Beginning Tuesday, weather permitting, eastbound and westbound U.S. 56 will be reduced to one lane at several mile increments at a time throughout the project duration. Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via channelizers and flaggers. There will be a 12-foot lane width restriction through the project work zone throughout the project duration.

Drivers should expect minor delays throughout the project duration.

The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.

Mid America Road Builders Inc., of Platte City, Mo., is the primary contractor on the resurfacing project with a total contract cost of $667,202. The scheduled completion date for the resurfacing project is mid-September 2013, weather permitting.
