John Raymond Quaney, 81, Burlingame: May 3, 1941 – May 5, 2022

BURLINGAME, Kan. – John Raymond Quaney, 81, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka, Kan. He was born May 3, 1941, in Topeka, the son of Eugene and Anna (Heise) Quaney.

He had spent his youth in the Topeka area.

John met his first wife, Marilyn McGeeney, at a CYO event in Topeka. They were married Nov. 27, 1965, in Emmett, Kan. To this union two daughters were born, Christi and Susan. Marilyn passed away on July 26, 1977. Years later, John was blessed to meet Raylene Smith during a Singles in Agriculture event, and they married Feb. 17, 1996.

John graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1959. After graduating, he farmed and raised cattle in the Burlingame, Kan., community until his last days. He enjoyed farming with his son-in-law and grandsons in his later years. John enjoyed his grandkids and finding great ways to get into trouble with them on any occasion. He shared his love of the land and cattle with them all. Faith, family, farming and friends best describe his world.

John served as a board member for the Burlingame Coop, St. Patrick’s Church Council, and Burlingame Township. He was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, at Osage City.

John was also preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Anna; two brothers, Martin and Thomas Quaney; sister, Mary A. Quaney; and step-granddaughter, Madi Smith, in July 2011.

John is survived by his wife, Raylene, of the home; his two daughters, Christi (Brian) Droege, Burlingame, and Susan (Ross) Brinker, Valley Falls, Kan.; brother, Joseph Quaney, Burlingame; five grandchildren, Chance Droege, Allison (Eric) Stadel, Jessa Brinker (Aaron Branham), Dalton Droege and Jaci Brinker; great-grandson, Stetson Stadel; four stepsons, Keith (Cindy) Smith, Travis Smith, Jason (Stephanie) Smith and Rob (Kimberly) Smith; 10 bonus grandchildren, Cody Smith, Zac Smith, Megan (Jerry) West, Tristan Smith, Desi Smith, Gabrielle Smith, Christian Smith, Aislyn Smith, Duke Smith and Rylee Smith.

Mass of Christian Burial for John will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 12, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Osage City. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Scranton, Kan. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, at St. Patrick, with rosary following.
