TOPEKA – Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services Secretary Shawn Sullivan presented an Overbrook adult care facility with an achievement award Aug. 21. Brookside Retirement Community received a Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas Nursing Homes (PEAK) award for sustaining person-centered care for its residents.

“Brookside embraced culture change to bring person-centered care to rural Kansas,” Sullivan said. “Each resident here is valued for who they are, and the close relationships of residents and their families with staff at Brookside shows what true quality of life can mean.”

State Rep. Ken Corbet was also in attendance at the award presentation to acknowledge Brookside’s commitment to providing a quality place for Kansas’ aging population to call home.

Sullivan announced earlier this year that eight Kansas adult care facilities are 2013 PEAK award recipients. KDADS oversees the PEAK Nursing Homes Initiative. PEAK awards are issued annually to homes that accomplish significant improvements toward person-centered care in the targeted areas of resident choice, staff empowerment, home environment and meaningful life. Person-centered nursing homes have moved away from the institutional model of nursing home care and toward a more home-like environment in which residents have a say in their day-to-day lives.

“All Kansas adult care facilities can use Brookside’s roadmap for culture change as a guide to providing the services we value as part of the PEAK program,” Sullivan said.

Brookside is located at 702 W. Seventh St., Overbrook.

  • LakePoint Augusta, Augusta
  • Lone Tree Retirement Community, Meade
  • Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community, Manhattan
