Ottawa woman dies Thursday after single-car accident on I-35

OSAGE COUNTY, Kan. – The Osage County Sheriff’s Office has reported an Ottawa woman died after a single-car accident Thursday morning on Interstate 35, near Melvern, Kan.

The sheriff’s office report said deputies and area emergency personnel responded to a report of injury accident at about 8:50 a.m. July 7, 2022.

Deputies arrived to the scene near milepost 164 on I-35 to find a 2001 Dodge Caravan that had been travelling northbound and left the roadway for an unknown reason. The vehicle came to rest after rolling in a tree line.

The driver, Velma J. Kissinger, 64, of Ottawa, Kan., was transported by Osage County EMS to an Overland Park hospital in critical condition. She later succumbed to her injuries.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by Osage County Fire District No. 3, Osage County EMS, and Coffey County Fire District No. 1.
