Dr. Ramona Jean Anshutz, 88, Harveyville: Nov. 4, 1934 – June 16, 2023

HARVEYVILLE, Kan. – Ramona Jean Anshutz, Ph.D., formerly of Harveyville, Kan., and Lake Wabaunsee, passed away June 16, 2023, at Brookside Health and Rehabilitation, Overbook, Kan. Ramona was born the daughter of Donald and Mildred Venable, Nov. 4, 1934, in Beaver, Okla.

Ramona was united in marriage to George F. Anshutz, June 3, 1951. Ramona and George had two children, Denise and Braden.

She spent her childhood in Beaver, and completed her education at Blackwell High School, Blackwell, Okla. She achieved her undergraduate degree at Panhandle State University, Blackwell, and received her Master’s of Education from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kan. Her proudest educational achievement was receiving her Doctorate of Education degree from the University of Kansas.

Ramona, George and the family lived most of their lives in Harveyville, originally moving there in 1965. Later, George and Ramona moved to Lake Wabaunsee, in Wabaunsee County, Kan., where they remained until they became residents of Brookside Health and Rehabilitation.

A lifelong educator and consultant, Ramona taught elementary school in Oklahoma, Colorado and Kansas. She was a professor at Emporia State Teachers College, University of Kansas, and Ottawa University. Ramona also served the field of education as a mathematics and science consultant for the state of Kansas and the Southwest Plains Regional Service Center.

Ramona loved the water, was an avid swimmer and water skier, and taught Braden and Denise how to ski. She also enjoyed camping with her family during summers. After moving to Lake Wabaunsee, Ramona and George loved to entertain family and friends on their pontoon boat. Her constant companions at the lake were her dogs, Linus, Charlie and Cotton. George and Ramona loved their dogs throughout their lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, of 66 years; daughter, Denise, killed in an automobile accident in 1984; and sister, Faye Stone.

She is survived by her son, Braden and his wife, Trudy, of Overbrook; three grandchildren, Zac (Jennifer), Overbrook, Phoenix (Megan), Wichita, Kan., and Cassidy Anshutz, Overbrook; four great-grandchildren, Bailey and Cale Anshutz, Overbrook, and Harper and Nicholas Seele, Burlingame, Kan.; brother, Dale (Shirley) Venable; sister, Kaye (Don) Sinclair; nephews, Bret (Belinda) Stone, and Doug (Veronica) Howell; and nieces, Sue (Brian) Powers, Monique (Barry) Blogowsky, and Lynn (Frank) Evans; and numerous great-nephews and nieces.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 23, at Harveyville Cemetery, Harveyville. The family will receive visitors at the cemetery following the services.
