Russell Dean Cowan, 80, Osage City: Sept. 6, 1943 – Oct. 15, 2023

OSAGE CITY, Kan. – Russell Dean Cowan, 80, passed away Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kan. He was born Sept. 6, 1943, in San Angelo, Texas, the son of Royce and Nadine (Lee) Cowan.

Russell attended school in Arizona and graduated from high school in Buffalo, Mo.

Russell enlisted in the U.S. Army as an engineer, and served from 1964 to 1966. He worked in construction as a mechanic and operator for Clarkson Construction and Hamm Construction until his retirement in 2003.

He was a member of the Robert Heizer American Legion Post 198, of Osage City, Kan., and the Operating Engineer Local No. 101. Russell enjoyed spending quality time with family, traveling and fishing, meeting people, and helping out when needed.

On March 11, 1965, Russell was united in marriage to Sharon A. Manning, in Osage City. To this union four children were born, Russ Jr., Joan, Dee and Michelle.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Royce and Nadine; and three brothers, Doyle, Houston and Dale.

Russell is survived by his wife, Sharon, of 58 years; son, Russell Jr.; three daughters, Joan, Dee and Michelle; sister, Myrtle Joyce of Arkansas; and 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the American Legion Post, Osage City. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Lyndon Cemetery, Lyndon, Kan.
