BHS Lady Cats suffer season’s first losses at Lyndon tournament

Coming into the Lyndon tournament Saturday with a beginning of the season winning streak, the Burlingame High School Lady Cats volleyball players were dealt their first losses of the season in games against Wabaunsee and Valley Falls.

The Lady Cats came out strong against Lebo, winning two sets 25-23 and 25-18, and then winning two against Northern Heights, 28-26 and 25-20. The team had a tougher time in their first match against Valley Falls, scoring 25-20, 15-25 and 22-25.

“We started out the day slow, got on fire for a short time, and then went into a slump and stayed there for the remainder of the day,” said Lady Cats Coach Chelsi Gardner.

“We came out of our pool in second place since we lost to Valley Falls, so we had Wabaunsee in the first game of bracket play,” Gardner said. “I knew Wabaunsee would be after us, since we beat them in the sub-state semi-finals and the championship game of this tournament last year. They are a good team, they are big and they are strong.”

Wabaunsee took down the Lady Cats in two sets, 13-25 and 8-25, followed by another match against Valley Falls, in which BHS lost 21-15, 26-28.

“By the time we got to play Valley Falls again for the third-place game, it seemed that we just ran out of gas,” the coach said. “Sometimes it just isn’t your day, and Saturday was simply not our day at Lyndon.”

Notable stats for the day included: Kills, Haley Lewis, 50, Karli Zabokrtsky, 15; assists, Ashton Dorr, 70; digs, Dorr, 52, Kayela Ullmer, 42, McKenzie McClenahan, 38.
