Carbondale area drivers advised Wakarusa bridge project to close South Topeka Blvd.

Topeka, Kan. – Shawnee County Public Works has announced that a portion of Topeka Boulevard about four miles north of Carbondale will be closed for seven months for a bridge replacement project on the Wakarusa River.

The project will begin at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, with the closure of South Topeka Boulevard south of its intersection with SW 97th Street, and north of the intersection of Topeka Boulevard and SW 101st Street. The project will remove and replace the existing bridge over the Wakarusa River.

The new bridge is projected to be completed and Topeka Boulevard reopened to unrestricted traffic by Sept. 27, 2024.

No formal detour will be posted for this project. Message boards will be installed Feb. 7 to advise motorists of the pending closure. Through traffic is advised to use U.S. Highway 75 as an alternate route. Connections to US-75 are located between SW 85th and SW 93rd in Shawnee County, on Main Street (East 137th St.) in Carbondale, and U.S. Highway 56 in Osage County.
