OSAGE CITY, Kan. – Old Abe Camp No. 16 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will hold a headstone rededication ceremony at 9 a.m. Aug. 8, 2026, for two Civil War veterans interred in the Osage City Cemetery, 22828 W. Highway 31, Osage City, Kan.
Private William Beckler of Company C, 8th Maine infantry, was buried in the Odd Fellows section of Osage City Cemetery in 1896. Beckler was traveling east from California and passed away after a fatal train wreck north of Osage City.
Private Joel E. Haworth of Company M, 20th New York Cavalry, died in 1891 from pneumonia, having suffered debilitating disease since his discharge from military duty.
Over the passing years, both headstones that marked each man’s resting place had been badly damaged and unreadable. Both stones were replaced with Veterans Affairs markers Memorial Day weekend by members of Old Abe Camp No. 16 SUVCW.
The ceremony will be near the Women’s Relief marker on the north side of the cemetery. The public is invited to attend.
