Frontier Extension District, Marais des Cygnes Extension District, Franklin County Farm Bureau, Franklin County EMS, and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office are partnering to host a free ATV Safety Rider Training, Aug. 3-4, 2026, at KanEquip, 3313 Nebraska Terrace, Ottawa, KS 66067.
ATVs are valuable tools for work and recreation, but they also require proper training to operate safely. This hands-on course is designed to help riders develop the skills and confidence needed to safely operate an ATV while reducing the risk of injury. Whether participants are new riders or looking to improve their abilities, the course emphasizes safe riding habits and responsible ATV operation.
The ATV rider course is a fast-paced, interactive training that includes instruction on pre-ride inspections, starting and stopping, quick turns, hill riding, emergency stopping and swerving, riding over obstacles, and other essential riding techniques.
Three 3-hour sessions will be offered 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3; 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4; and 1-4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4.
Class size is limited to eight participants per session to provide individualized instruction. The course is open to ages 10 and older, and adults are encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate.
Participants will be provided with a loaner ATV, helmet, goggles, and gloves. Those who have their own DOT- or Snell-rated helmet, goggles, and gloves are welcome to use them. Participants must wear a long-sleeve shirt, long pants, and over-the-ankle boots. Required online paperwork must be completed before attending the course.
