Lyndon Tigers struggle for second win over Northern Heights in 2 weeks

Lyndon High School Tigers football coach Rod Stallbaumer correctly predicted Friday’s game against Northern Heights, the second time the teams faced each other in two weeks, would be a test for both teams. It was touch and go for the Tigers as Northern Heights took the lead in the first quarter. The Wildcats matched the Tigers touchdown for touchdown except for the second quarter, when the Tigers took back the lead and maintained it until the end, winning 49-44.

“Northern Heights is a good football team and they played well,” Stallbaumer said. “We were fortunate to make enough plays to win the game.

“It’s the play-offs and we knew that they would raise their level of intensity,” the coach said. “I don’t think that we did a good job of raising ours. We didn’t match their physicality early and we turned the ball over on our second possession to give them momentum and allowed them to build confidence.

“I was proud that even when we fell behind our guys never panicked and continued to plug away.”

Stallbaumer said the Tigers’ tackling would need to improve for Friday’s game against Troy, which has a 7-3 overall record.

“We tackled too high all night and allowed way too many yards after contact,” he said.

The Tigers will face another test against Troy, the coach said, noting the Trojan’s proven abilities this season.

“Troy is a very good football team, they might be the most athletic team we’ve played this season and they are playing really well right now,” Stallbaumer said. “We will have to play well to win.”

The Tigers last played Troy in the 2007 play-offs; Lyndon won 24-22. Friday’s sectional play-off game is at 7 p.m. at Troy.

Last week’s win marked the fourth regional championship in Lyndon’s history (2006, 2007, 2012, 2013), and the third 10-0 start (1997, 2012, 2013).
