Francis “Fritz” Tyrell, 90, Topeka: June 8, 1923 – Jan. 6, 2014

TOPEKA – Francis “Fritz” Tyrell, 90, formerly of Lyndon, passed away on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at a Topeka, Kan., hospital. He was born on June 8, 1923, in Talmage, Kan., the son of Benjamin and Margaret Curran Tyrell.

Fritz enlisted in the U.S. Army in August of 1944. He served in the European Theater during World War II and received a Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. After his discharge he worked at Wissin Motor Company in Abilene as an auto mechanic, and later owned and operated the Wakefield Marina on Milford Lake.

Fritz was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, and weekly excursions with his family. He loved working with his hands and was a skilled carpenter.

On Sept. 14, 1950, Fritz was married to Marion Elizabeth Custer, in Abilene. Together they had three children, Robert “Kent” Tyrell, Karen Tyrell and Karl Tyrell.

Fritz was preceded in death by his wife Marion; his son Karl; his parents; his sister, Leta Sword, and two brothers, Kenneth and Woodrow Tyrell.

Fritz is survived by his son Kent (Dana) Tyrell; his daughter, Karen Tyrell; two grandchildren, Brian and Jennifer Tyrell; a great-granddaughter, Illayahs Tyrell; and his sister, Margaret Donnelly; and other family and friends in Abilene and Lyndon.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Feltner Funeral Home, in Lyndon. Private inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Disabled American Veterans or to the donor’s choice and sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS 66451.
