John ‘Jack’ Hess, 78, Burlingame: May 29, 1935 – Jan. 25, 2014

BURLINGAME –  John A. “Jack” Hess, 78, of Burlingame, passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014.

John Arthur Hess was born May 29, 1935, in Waverly, Kan., the son of Ernest “Beano” and Florence Nadine (LaRue) Hess.

He graduated from Waverly High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army during Korean War.

Jack was joined in marriage to A. Ann Boyer on Dec. 20, 1959, in Melvern, Kan.  She preceded him in death on July 19, 2009.  He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

John had worked the majority of his life in concrete construction for Standard Paving, Conroy Construction, in Topeka, and Burlingame Construction. He had also worked at the Wolf Creek Power Plant, at Burlington. He had worked as a cattleman on family farm for many years.

He was a member of the Lions Club in Burlingame.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Hess, of Osage City, and Susan Boswell, Emporia; two sons, Doug (Angie) Hess, Lecompton, and Chris Hess, Burlingame; a brother, James Hess, Topeka; and nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, in Osage City.  Mr. Hess will lie in state from 4- 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the funeral home with family receiving friends 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Prairie View Church and sent in care of VanArsdale Funeral Home, 107 N. Sixth St., Osage City, KS 66523.
