020914_rep_mast_peggy_1The end of January brought good news to Kansas as three crucial economic indicators beat previous projections and showed continued economic growth. Corporate income tax receipts closed out the month at 225 percent or $11.2 million above projections. Use tax receipts ended at 16 percent or $5.7 million more than expected. Individual income tax receipts rounded out the trifecta at $4.5 million above projection. January tax receipts put Kansas $21.1 million above estimates for the 2014 fiscal year.

I enjoyed meeting with representatives of the Students Against Destructive Decisions from across Kansas. I am pleased to be working with The Kansas Family Partnerships Organizations in helping prevent substance abuse and other risky behaviors in students.

Emergency propane relief program

On Feb. 3, the Kansas Department for Children and Families announced a new emergency propane relief program. This program will provide some temporary relief to those families who use propane as their primary heating source and whose income falls between 130 and 185 percent of the poverty level. Households with income below 130 percent of the poverty level can apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). The Emergency Propane Relief Program will provide assistance in the form of a one-time $511 benefit. Eligible households will be given a two-party check, which can only be deposited by the propane vendor. The program comes in response to the current propane shortage, with some customers seeing as much as a 300 percent increase in the price of propane.

Applications are available at all DCF service centers and can also be downloaded from www.dcf.ks.gov. Completed applications and other necessary documents must be faxed, emailed to [email protected], or delivered to a DCF service center before 5 p.m. March 4, 2014. In order to qualify for the program, families must meet the following criteria:

  1. Households must use propane as their primary heating source and provide verification of their current propane vendor and bill.
  2. Applicants must provide verification of their household’s income for the past 30 days.
  3. The combined monthly gross income of household members must be between 130 and 185percent of the federal poverty level.
