Robert Vanderslice, 83, Lyndon: Aug. 9, 1930 – Feb. 7, 2014

LYNDON – Robert “Bob” Vanderslice, 83, passed away on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at a nursing home in Lansing, Kan. He was born on Aug. 9, 1930, in Lyndon, Kan., the son of Jacob and Mary Johnston Vanderslice.

Bob grew up in Lyndon, graduating from Lyndon High School in 1948. He lived in Lyndon until 1985 when he moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where he lived until moving back to Lyndon in 2001.

Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He had farmed for many years and managed the Lyndon Bowling Alley for several years. From 1967 to 1985, he worked for Standard Oil and then Amoco Oil. While in Phoenix, he worked as a truck driver for Great Western Produce. He was a member of the American Legion Post 125 and the V.F.W. Post 6406, both in Lyndon.

On Dec. 9, 1951, Bob was married to Norma Weiss at the Zion Lutheran Church in Vassar.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, on Nov. 28, 2013; his sister, Ina Rake and husband, Bob; brother-in-law, Erven “Bud” Weiss; two sisters-in-law, Velma Schmutte and husband, Lester, and Ruby Wiley and husband, Keith; a niece, Mary Ann Weiss, and a nephew, Bob Wiley.

Bob is survived by his two children, Rick Vanderslice and wife, Bev, of Overland Park, and Karen Bissell and husband, Ben, of Hillsboro, Mo.; and four grandsons, Josh, Jake, Zach and Matthew.

Funeral services for Bob will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Feltner Funeral Chapel in Lyndon. Burial will be in the Lyndon Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lyndon American Legion (for the Avenue of Flags) or the Lyndon Endowment Association and sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS 66451.
