Conservation district announces student poster, essay and limerick winners

Each year the Osage County Conservation District sponsors a poster, essay and limerick contest. Information is given to the schools in late September. Entries are due before Christmas break. There is a different theme each year that is determined by the National Association of Conservation Districts. This year’s theme was “Dig Deeper – Mysteries in the Soil”. A total of 336 entries were received in Osage County’s contest.

This year’s winners are:

Limericks: Laci Davenport, purple; Noah Pitman, blue; Kiersten White, red; Abby Dunbar, white. All limerick winners are in fifth grade at Osage City Elementary School.

Essays: Taylin Kirkpatrick, purple; Kiersten White, blue, both in fifth grade at Osage City Elementary School.

Posters, fourth, fifth and sixth grades: Colby Vogeler, purple, Marais des Cygnes Valley; Nikki Pickens, blue, Osage City; Tyler Sage, red, Osage City; Jenna Hamilton, white, Osage City.

Posters, second and third grades: Emma Marsh, purple, Marais des Cygnes Valley; Kaityn Gantenbein, blue, Osage City; Oli Thomas, red, Marais des Cygnes Valley; Landon Boss, white, Osage City.

Posters, kindergarten and first grade: McKenna McFarlane, purple; Gabe Bennett, blue; Drake Skirvin, red; Kaylee Slater, white. All winners are in kindergarten at Burlingame Elementary School.

The top winner in each division will be sent to the state competition that will be held in November 2014.

“Congratulations to all the winners,” Osage County Conservation District manager Lori Kuykendall said. “We appreciate the teachers and students taking time to enter the contest.”
