Jimmy Dean Gates, 73, Overbrook: Oct.15, 1940 – Feb.19, 2014

Jimmy Dean GatesOVERBROOK – Jimmy Dean Gates, 73, of Overbrook, Kan., passed away on Wednesday, Feb.19, 2014. He was born on Oct.15, 1940, in a farm house near Paola, Kan., to the late Lloyd and Floy (Bingham) Gates.

Jim graduated from Paola High school and received a bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry from Kansas State University in 1962.

He was united in marriage with Mary Ruth Gasaway on February 1, 1964, in Wichita, Kan. Jim and Mary recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. 

Jim was a respected member of the Overbrook community. He served as city council president. He was an active member of the Overbrook Rotary Club where he served as president for two years and received the Paul Harris Fellow award in 1985. He served as secretary for Ridgeway Lodge No. 62. He served on the committee that was instrumental in getting the Jones Park of Overbrook built. Jim was also a member of the Overbrook United Methodist Church.

After leaving the farm, Jim’s first job was as a salesman for Henry Sales and Service, in Topeka, Kan. Jim and Mary owned and operated Four Corners Implement Company from 1969-1991. Jim worked as a salesman for Murphy Tractor Company, in Topeka, where he retired after 14 years of service.

Jim is survived by his wife Mary of the home; two children, Todd Gates, of Overbrook, and Debra Jones, who also resides in Overbrook with husband Darin Jones; five grandchildren, Chelsie LeAnne Gates, Brandon James Jones, Trevor Lee Jones, Lauren Ruth Gates, Ryan Dean Gates; great-grandson Aries Lee Jones; and sister, Donna Kern, Paola, Kan.

Jim will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and great friend. Jim was also an avid K-State fan: GO CATS!

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 24, at Overbrook United Methodist Church, Overbrook. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Overbrook United Methodist Church.
