Fair dates set: Start thinking about blue ribbons

All dates have now been set for Osage County’s fair season, and it’s time to think about how you’re going to win a blue ribbon. Kicking off the season June 19, 20 and 21, 2014, is Melvern’s Sunflower Days 4-H Fair, renowned for its carnival, nightly bingo games, homemade ice cream, and a burger stand operated by local student groups.

Getting under way the week after, the Osage County Fair will be June 25-29, at Osage City, featuring a local talent show, the popular fair parade, and three nights of carnival. Other evening entertainment is being planned. For more information, see this story.

Finishing the 2014 fair season will be the Overbrook Osage County Fair. Last week the fair board set Aug. 14-17 for the county’s fair where fairgoers typically enjoy the festivities in the hottest part of the Kansas summer. A schedule hasn’t been set yet, but the Overbrook fair is known for its nightly exciting motor sports, whether lawn mower tractor pull, demolition derby or circle track races.

All of the fairs feature exhibition and judging of the county’s best livestock, poultry, produce, foods, projects and handicrafts. FFA and 4-H members are eligible to exhibit at Melvern Sunflower Days 4-H Fair, while the Osage City and Overbrook fairs have a variety of exhibition classes and categories open to everyone.
