Ronald G. Farwell, 78, Ottawa: May 27, 1935 – March 17, 2014

OTTAWA – Ronald G. Farwell, 78, of Ottawa, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014, at his home in Ottawa. He was born on May 27, 1935, in Peoria, Ill., the son of Robert and Marion Leas Farwell.

Ron grew up in Peoria, graduating from Central High in 1953. He joined the U.S. Air Force on Jan. 12, 1954. They moved to Lyndon in 1970, and have been in Ottawa for the last 33 years.

On January 22, 1955, Ron was married to Leitha M. Light in Peoria, Ill.

Ron served in the Air Force from 1954 to 1974. He was a B-47 Crew Chief for nine years, and then retrained, becoming a C-130 Flight Engineer (the love of his life). He traveled extensively with both planes. Travel took him to Hawaii, Japan, England, Spain, France and Germany. He also served back to back tours in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972 He was awarded several Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of the American Legion Post 125, Lyndon.

After retiring from the Air Force, he worked as an auto mechanic for 11 years. He retired permanently in 1985 to do his second favorite thing after flying, and that was fishing.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents; his brother Chester; and a great granddaughter Korrynn Hoffman.

Ron is survived by his wife Leitha, of the home; and Ronald K. (Anita), Robert W. (Lynda), Michael A. (Glenda), Laurie A. (Jeff), Letha (Nina), sister Marilee Hiett, and sister-in-law Janet Farwell.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 20, at the Feltner Chapel, in Lyndon. Burial will be at the Vassar Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 19; family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m.  The family requests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to be made to Grace Hospice or Faith Lutheran Church and sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS 66451.
