Outdoors: Fishing reports for Melvern Lake, Pomona Lake, Osage County Fishing Lake

The following fishing and lake reports for Osage County lakes were provided by Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism. MELVERN RESERVOIR – Last Updated: 3/21/2014

Species Rating Size Baits, Method, & Location
Crappie Fair-Good 0.33-1 pounds Melvern Marina reports that fish being caught are on jigs, both tube or hair, with either white or green depending on the day has worked well. Also, spoons are catching fish some days.
Walleye Slow 1-3 pounds Walleye should be moving up on the dam to spawn.  Anglers usually catch them on jigs, floating/diving lures, and other crankbaits.
Boat ramp conditions All ramps in Corps parks and state park have sufficient depth for launching.
General Comments
Lake level was 2.84′ below normal, release = 20 cfs, and temperature = 41 F.  Melvern Reservoir has Zebra Mussels. Remember to clean, drain, and dry your boat and fishing equipment when leaving the lake to keep from spreading them to other lakes.

POMONA RESERVOIR – Last Updated: 3/24/2014

Species Rating Size Baits, Method, & Location
Channel catfish Slow 2 – 7 pounds Use worms or dip baits and crappie entrails or cutshad, stink/prepared baits. The fish feeders are off. Lakewide or stilling basin.
Walleye Slow varies The walleye population is improving, try off windy points, crank baits or jigs tipped with nightcrawler.
White bass, Wipers Poor varies Lakewide and the windy side of the points, wipers are following the schools of shad, minnows or shad colored lures, off the COE Swim beach.
Crappie Slow/Good most were 9 – 14 inches Lakewide, marina docks, over brushpiles, black and pink tube jigs, minnows. About 6 ft on the wind side, most fish are over 10 inches, fish are slowly moving in.
