August: Osage County fair at Overbrook

The Overbrook Osage County Fair is shaping up to be four days of fun, with the Overbrook Osage County Fair board meeting recently to firm plans.

The fair, scheduled for August 13-16, 2014, will feature the Jones and Company Carnival, known throughout Kansas, Missouri and Iowa for its blend of adult, intermediate and kiddie rides, and variety of midway foods.

As in the past, the 4-H horse show will be held the previous weekend on Aug. 9 at the Overbrook fairgrounds arena.

But the big surprise is the fairgrounds arena will have a new look this year. Plans are in the works to have a new fence built, also enlarging the arena to so that it can host events that need more space. And anyone who has enjoyed shows such as horse shows, demolition derbies, lawn mower races, or other motor sports entertainment in the arena will have the opportunity to help build the fence, either manually or monetarily.

According to Luke Lang, fence committee chairman, plans have been developed to enlarge the space inside the arena surrounded by a fence, and also construct a new fence around the entire area.

Lang said last Friday that a work day has been set and a crew has been recruited to demolish the old fence, but afterward a fundraising effort will begin in earnest for the new fence.

As planned, 20 feet sections of the fence will be “sold” for $200, with the buyer then authorized to hang advertising on the fence during events in the arena.

“We’ll guarantee to the donors they can use the space for at least five years, anytime there’s an event,” Lang said.

Smaller donations will also be accepted for the new fence that will surround a 200 feet by 400 feet arena. Lang said donors of all amounts of donations will have their names displayed on a plaque at the fairgrounds.

He said the larger fenced area will allow the arena to be used for a variety of events.

“In the near future, we’d like to have bigger events like motocross, and even concerts,”  he said.

Plans are to have the new fence built for the slate of evening shows during the August fair.

Lang laid out the schedule, with the first two nights offering free admission: Wednesday night will feature lawn mower pulls Old Yellers Pullers, and renegade pulls. Thursday night will have off the farm tractor, hot rod truck and diesel pickup pulls. Friday, the arena will be filled with the roar of oval and TT ATV races. Saturday is the crowd favorite demolition derby.

And as Lang puts it, “They should be great shows!”
