Community partners spring into action to help ECKAN

A local organization that is in the business of helping others recently found itself on the receiving end of community generosity.

ECKAN’s Osage City’s office is temporarily at the RCIL chapel located at 1137 Laing, Osage City.

After two back-to-back winter storms dumped heavy snow across Osage County in February, the roof collapsed on the building that housed the Osage City office of ECKAN (East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation). ECKAN occupied a suite at 619 Market St., in the building known locally as Southwest Plaza.

According Kenna Burns, ECKAN’s Osage County coordinator, the ECKAN office was closed due to the weather, so no one was in the office when the roof collapsed.

Afterward, Byron Jordan, director of the Osage County Senior Center across the street from the ECKAN office, invited the organization to operate in the senior center.

“Byron and his wonderful staff were very accommodating and pleasant under not-so-pleasant circumstances,” Burns said.

Burns said ECKAN also received an outpouring of generous support from other community organizations, including Resource Center for Independent Living, the city of Burlingame, Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas, ECAT and Help House.

“The response received from community partners has been amazing and ECKAN is honored to continue to be a part of a wonderful and generous community where people really do care about each other,” Burns said. “The ladies of the ECKAN office in Osage County would like to send out a heartfelt thank you to all the community partners who have gone above and beyond to help a neighbor in time of need.”

ECKAN is temporarily operating from the RCIL chapel located at 1137 Laing, Osage City. A permanent location is being sought.

ECKAN is a community action agency that serves low-income persons in Anderson, Coffey, Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Lyon, Miami, Morris and Osage counties.
