OCHS Band chosen to perform in mass halftime show at Alamo Bowl

The Osage City High School’s last concert of the school year will be Thursday. The band members’ skills and talents have led to them being selected to perform in the halftime show of the Alamo Bowl in December.

With their last performance of the school year this Thursday, the Osage City High School Band’s year of achievements is coming to an end with another exciting honor – being invited to perform at the Alamo Bowl, in San Antonio, Texas, in December.

The band will be performing with other bands in a mass halftime show that brings together a cast of over 1,000 high school musicians, dancers and cheerleaders from across the nation.

“We will learn the music before we travel, and rehearse with other students from all over the country when we get there,” said OCHS band director Melissa Askren.

As planned, approximately 50 band members and chaperones will travel by charter bus to San Antonio near the end of December; dates are pending until the date of the Alamo Bowl is set.

While at San Antonio, the band will also take in some sightseeing, visiting Sea World, the River Walk, and touring the Alamo, along with other sights.

The band members are responsible for raising funds for the trip, estimated at $800 each. The band’s main fundraisers are raffles, with a recent raffle offering a hotel gift card and cash to use on a trip. Next fall, the band plans a raffle with beef packages as prizes. Other fundraisers include concessions stands and bake sales.

Askren said the band is extremely proud of its many accomplishments this year, and listed some of the band’s major awards:

  • “1” rating at State Large Group Festival in April (A “1” rating is the highest possible rating a band or performance can receive.)
  • “1” rating at Osage City’s League Band Festival in March.
  • “1” ratings on all six solos and small ensemble performances at the league band festival in March
  • “1” ratings on all three band solos at the regional solo and small ensemble competition in March.
  • “1” ratings on two band solos at state solo and small ensemble competition in April.

In addition, three high school students were accepted to district band, and one was accepted to state band this school year.

“We were also invited to perform as the Flint Hills Optimist Club’s Pep Band at their all-star basketball games in Emporia in March,” Askren said. “They selected us because they saw us perform at our league tournament and were impressed with us!”

Askren also tallied some statistics for the high school band this year.

“We have given over 30 public performances this year as a full band, and 50 public performances including all of the jazz band and extra events,” she said. “We have traveled over 1,000 miles for competitions, basketball games, football games, and more, and all of those miles are in the state of Kansas!”

The final Osage City Band concert of the school year is this Thursday, May 1, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Osage City High School Auditorium.

On Monday, May 5, Osage City schools will be presenting one more musical performance with the Choir and Jazz Band Variety Show (7 p.m. at the auditorium).
