KDOT to host open house for K-170 bridge replacement project

Bridge construction to close state highway near Reading

The Kansas Department of Transportation is hosting a public open house on Thursday, May 22, 2014, for the upcoming construction on two bridges in Osage County on state Highway 170. The public is invited to drop by the open house meeting anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. at the Reading Community Center, 613 First St., Reading.

The project includes the removal of two existing bridge structures, located approximately 3.5 miles east of Reading, that will be replaced with a haunch slab span bridge and a reinforced concrete box structure. New guard fence and flatter side slopes will provide an extra measure of safety to the travelling public.

Anyone interested in the K-170 bridge replacement project is invited to attend the open house to see displays on the construction schedule and potential traffic impacts. KDOT staff will be on hand to answer questions about the project. There will be no formal presentations.

Project construction is slated to begin in mid-June and to be completed in late November 2014, weather permitting. Eastbound and westbound K-170 will be closed to through traffic over the two bridges  throughout the project duration. Traffic will follow a marked detour via state Highway 99 north from the K-170 intersection to U.S. Highway 56 south to K-170 east and conversely for traffic traveling the opposite direction.

This project is funded by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010. Find out more about these and other T-WORKS projects at: http://kdotapp.ksdot.org/TWorks/.

The K-170 bridge replacement project construction handout will be available online after the public open house at: http://www.ksdot.org/topekaMetro/projectstudyNEKS.asp.
