Ruth Jean Fisher Merrifield, 79, Osage City: Sept. 24, 1934 – May 15, 2014

Ruth Jean Fisher Merrifield, 79, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, at her home in Osage City.

She was born Sept. 24, 1934, in Bazaar, Kan., the daughter of Tom and Inez Russell Fisher.

She had a busy life, working for the gas company and Cozy Café while still in high school. Ruth was a member of the Burlingame High School Class of 1953. Soon after graduation she moved to Topeka and was joined in marriage to Duane Merrifield in September 1953.

She worked at Hallmark and Bell Telephone until starting a family. Later they moved to Overbrook, where she worked for O’Bryhim’s Thriftway. They settled down in Osage City in 1975 and Ruth began working at Ben Franklin and Marilynn’s, and retired after 23 years at Whalen Liquor.

She will be greatly missed by a daughter Angie Jean Glenn and her husband, Rob, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, Tony Glen Merrifield and his wife, Rhonda, Osage City, and Victor Carl Merrifield, Osage City; two sisters, Mary Vandevord and her husband, Dale, of Scranton, and Dora Mae Purcell and her husband, Paul, of Topeka; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Duane on April 7, 1993; a granddaughter, Valerie Boyle in 1982; her father in 1999 and her mother in 2003.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 19, at the VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, Osage City. Burial will follow services at Wilmington Cemetery near Harveyville. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral chapel.
