Leona Shaffer, 90, Burlingame: Sept. 1, 1923 – May 15, 2014

051714-Leona-Shaffer-Pic001BURLINGAME- Leona Mae Shaffer, 90, She departed this life May 15, 2014, at Wichita, with her sons at her side.

Leona Mae Shaffer, daughter of Edward and Annie Knight, was born Sept. 1, 1923, at Melvern, Kan. Leona attended Melvern public schools and graduated in 1941 as an honor student.

Leona married Ray W. Shaffer on Nov. 29, 1940, at Burlington, Kan. This marriage was blessed with three sons, Ronald, Robert and Leland. Leona and Ray enjoyed sports and were faithful followers of their sons and grandchildren. Leona worked 24 years at the Jostens yearbook company, retiring in 1980.

Leona was a member of the Melvern Church of God, the Federated Church of Burlingame, the American Legion Auxiliary, an active board member of the Osage County Senior Center, and was a volunteer for ECKAN for more than 20 years.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, on Dec. 23, 1983, and a son, Robert, on Oct. 13, 1945.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Christine), of Burlingame, and Leland (Patti), of Douglass; eight grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at the Melvern Church of God. The family will greet friends 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, at the Jones Vanarsdale Funeral chapel in Lebo, Kan.
