Outdoors: Fishing reports for Melvern Lake, Pomona Lake, Osage County Fishing Lake

The following fishing and lake reports for Osage County lakes were provided by Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

Melvern Lake – Updated: 5/23/2014

Species Rating Size Baits, Method & Location
Crappie Fair 0.33-1 lbs. Fish being caught on jigs and minnows from shore and over brush.
Black bass Good 0.5-3 lbs. Casting jigs, crankbaits and spinnerbaits.
Channel catfish Fair 1-5 lbs. Using fish guts.
Boat ramp conditions All ramps in Corps parks and state park have sufficient depth for launching.
General Comments: Lake level was 3.33′ below normal, release = 20 cfs, and temperature = 65 on May 23. Melvern Reservoir has zebra mussels; remember to clean, drain, and dry your boat and fishing equipment when leaving the lake to keep from spreading them to other lakes.

Pomona Lake – Updated: 5/21/2014

Species Rating Size Baits, Method & Location
Channel catfish Good 2 – 7 lbs. Use worms or dip baits and crappie entrails or cut shad, stink/prepared baits.  Lakewide or stilling basin.
Walleye Slow varies The walleye population is improving, try off windy points, crank baits or jigs tipped with nightcrawler.
White bass/Wipers Good varies Lakewide and the windy side of the points, wipers are following the schools of shad, minnows or shad colored lures, off the COE swim beach.
Crappie Slow/Good most were 9 – 14 inches Lakewide, marina docks, over brushpiles, black and pink tube jigs, minnows about 6 ft. on the winds side, most fish are over 10 inches, fish are slowly moving in.

Osage County State Fishing Lake – Updated: 5/23/2014

Species Rating Size Baits, Method & Location
Crappie Fair 0.3-1 lb. Using jigs and minnows from shore over brush piles and in weedbeds.
Bluegill Good Up to 0.3 lbs. Using worm under bobber.
Largemouth Bass Fair-Good 0.5-3 lbs. Using jigs, crankbaits and spinners.
Channel catfish Fair-Good 1-6 lbs. Using worms, stinkbait around feeders.
