Amy Lucille Benortham, 78, Overbrook: Aug. 2, 1942 – Nov. 21, 2020

OVERBROOK, Kan. – Amy Lucille “Lucy” Benortham, 78, went to be with the Lord Nov. 21, 2020, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook, Kan. Lucy was born Aug. 2, 1942, from parents, Lee Tichenor and Lola (Rollin) Tichenor, and grew up near Valley Falls, Kan.

She helped on her parents’ dairy farm and was very active in church work. Her entire family was musical and often spent time together singing hymns and doing special music for their church.

She graduated from Valley Falls High School class of 1960. She also graduated with a degree in Bible from Omaha Baptist College, Omaha, Neb. She then went to work at Sunshine Bible Academy, near Miller, S.D., as a bookkeeper.

Lucy returned to Topeka, Kan., and worked for Far-Mar-Co grain elevator for several years.

On Oct. 16, 1971, Lucy was united in marriage to Robert Benortham, in Topeka. They spent 49 years together serving the Lord in teaching Sunday school, working in the children’s AWANA program, and being involved with music and activities in their local church. Both Robert and Lucy were active in the Gideon ministry, where she served in various leadership positions both in the local and the state organizations. They even spent a short period of time on a summer missions’ project in Guatemala.

Lucy loved outside work like gardening and birds. She was also known to be an excellent cook. Robert and Lucy started and operated a small greenhouse and florist business for 20 years near Overbrook, while Lucy completed her degree for teaching. They discontinued the greenhouse and Lucy then taught third grade for 17 at Overbrook Elementary School before retiring.

She is survived by her husband, Robert, of the home; daughter, Sara Smith and her husband, David, St. Joseph, Mo.; three sisters, Nora Lovely and her husband, Dan, Norwalk, Iowa, Karla Alkire, Derby, Kan., Mary Shipps and her husband, Steve, Topeka; three grandchildren, Joscelyn, Nikola and Kyla; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Lola Tichenor.

Following COVID-19 guidelines, funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Overbrook Bible Church, 718 Western Heights Drive, Overbrook. The family will greet friends at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the service hour Saturday.
