OVERBROOK, Kan. – Doris M. Gloss, 85, of Overbrook, Kan., passed away Monday, Sept. 5, 2022, at the Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was born July 5, 1937, at Worden, Kan., the daughter of Harley C. Lyon and Faye (Wintermantel) Lyon.
Doris grew up in the Worden area, graduating from Baldwin City High School, Baldwin City, Kan., with the class of 1955. She graduated from Emporia State University, first with a bachelor’s degree and then a Master’s Degree in Education. She later attended Washburn University and received her degree as a reading specialist.

She was a member of the Grace Community Church, Overbrook, and Gideon’s International. She volunteered in the church’s children ministry for more than 30 years, many of those years as ministries leader. She loved teaching, but felt an immense sense of duty to educate children about the Lord. She knew how to make learning fun and purposeful, a unique gift of Doris’. She was very proud of her program that brought the elders of the Overbrook community together with the youth called Jesus Older and Youth or J.O.Y. After school she would have kids taken by bus to the Brookside Nursing Home, and they would study the Bible together.
Doris loved teaching, but she also loved to entertain house guests. Every December for many years, she spent the entire month, Dec. 1 to Christmas, having different church families over for Christmas dinner. Dinner at the Gloss house was a common occurrence to anyone who attended Grace Community Church. Her love of the Christmas season was only eclipsed by her love of her family. Doris was a caring and kind wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved spending time with all of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
