CARBONDALE, Kan. – Marilyn Mae Hockenberry, 66, of Carbondale, Kan., passed away Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022 at University of Kansas Medical Center St. Francis Campus, Topeka, Kan. She was born Nov. 23, 1955, at Topeka, the daughter of Thomas Allen Garner Jr. and Norma Jean (Black) Garner.
Marilyn grew up in Carbondale area and lived there most of her life. She attended Santa Fe Trail Schools in her youth.
She was an account specialist for 35 years for the Kansas Department of Revenue.
Marilyn loved cooking for her family. She spent hours watching the Food Network to find just the right meal for them, and then loved experimenting on them with her new dishes. It was really just a loving way to get them all over to be together. Being together with her family was her favorite thing in the world. Catching up on everyone’s busy life and see the kids and grandkids was such a joy to her. She loved talking to her sisters on the phone and keeping up on their lives. When she was able she was always tending to her yard with her Jeff Gordon mower, or taking care of her garden and plants that she cared for inside and outside of her house. She was especially fond of her roses that she spent many loving hours caring for to keep them looking beautiful. Above all things, Marilyn loved her family dearly and will be missed by them.
On Nov. 1, 1988, Marilyn was united in marriage to Kenneth Hockenberry, at Shawnee County Courthouse, Topeka. They shared 33 years of loving marriage.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Kenneth Hockenberry, Carbondale; two sons, Brian Gardner, Carbondale, and Doug Hockenberry and his wife, Haven, Overbrook, Kan.; daughter, Ashley Tipping and her husband Travis, Osage City, Kan.; two sisters, Martha Diane Warren and her husband, Don, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Kathleen Faye Dabney, Carbondale; three brothers, Thomas Allen Garner III and his wife, Anne, Bardstown, Ky., Charles Eugene Garner, Osage City, and Robert Lee Garner and his wife, Ann, Harveyville, Kan.; and three grandchildren, Malcolm, Rileigh, and Locklynn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Connie O’Hara; brother, David Garner; and son, Corey Hockenberry.
