Betty Doris Vanderslice, 95, Topeka: Sept. 12, 1927 – Oct. 11, 2022

TOPEKA, Kan. – Betty Doris Vanderslice, 95, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022, at Midland Hospice Care, Topeka, Kan. She was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Reading, Kan., the daughter of Hezie and Emma (Barnett) Bibbee.

Betty grew up in Reading, Osage City and Lyndon, Kan. She had lived for a time in Overbrook, Kan., before moving back to Lyndon, and has resided in Topeka since 2000.

Betty worked for Priebe Grocery, Vassar, Kan., O’Bryhim’s, Overbrook, and for grocery stores in Osage City and Lyndon. In 1966, she started work for the Kansas State Insurance Department, where she started as a clerk and moved up to supervisor of consumer compliance until her retirement in 1994.

Betty loved crafting, knitting, coloring, sewing, quilting and woodcrafts and ceramics, making her kids clothes and cheerleading outfits and neckties, supporting school sports. Betty grew up on the farm and had a love for horseback riding, and did so as long as she was able. Betty loved to travel and had made it to all but three states in the Union, and spent many miles traveling to sporting events with her children and grandchildren.

On Aug. 9, 1947, Betty was united in marriage to Curtis Vanderslice, in Wichita, Kan. To this union six children were born, Mary Ann, Bill, Jim, Rodger, Doug, and Lisa.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis, on Feb. 9, 1998; son, Jim, on Aug. 8, 1969; and her parents, Hezie and Emma.

Betty is survived by her five children, Mary Ann Leslie, Topeka, Bill (Linda) Vanderslice, Cottonwood Falls, Kan., Rodger Vanderslice, Overbrook, Doug Vanderslice, Kansas City, Mo., and Lisa (Duane) Morris, Auburn, Kan.; her sister, Marjorie Guenther, Olathe; and 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at Feltner Funeral Chapel, Lyndon. Readings and memories will be shared at 2 p.m. Inurnment will be in the Overbrook Cemetery at a later date.
