AUBURN, Kan. – Carol Kurtz, 89, of Auburn, Kan., formerly of Burlingame, Kan., passed away March 19, 2023, at her home. She was born Sept. 29, 1933, in Maple Hill, Kan., the daughter Seth Gurtler and Fannie (Winsor) Gurtler.
Carol grew up in rural Dickinson County, Kan., graduating from Dickinson County High School with the class of 1941. She moved to the Burlingame and Auburn area as an adult in 1964.
Carol was a cook for local school districts until becoming employed by Hallmark Cards, Osage City, Kan. She later moved on to Leavenworth, Kan., with the company, and was the cook there until her retirement.
On Aug. 30, 1953, Carol was united in marriage to Donald Kurtz, at the Lyona Methodist Church in rural Dickinson County. They shared 63 years of marriage until Donald’s death in 2017.
Carol was a member of the Burlingame Federated Church, Burlingame.
Carol is survived by three children, Allen Kurtz and his wife, Tammye, St. Cloud, Fla., Steve Kurtz and his wife, Ky, Topeka, Kan., and Janet (Kurtz) Hunt and her husband, Scott, Auburn; son-in-law, Ron Fike, Carbondale, Kan.; brother, Wendell “Pete” Gurtler and his wife, Shirley, Iowa Falls, Iowa; sister, Sharon Holland and her husband, Virgil, Monroe, Wash.; and 20 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Kurtz; daughter, Nancy Fike; and brother, Roger Gurtler.
The family welcomes friends for a visitation service 6-8 p.m. Thursday March 30, at Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, 503 S. Topeka Ave., Burlingame. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 31, at Burlingame Federated Church, 322 S. Topeka Ave., Burlingame. Burial will follow at Burlingame Cemetery.
