MELVERN, Kan. – RD “Pat” Patterson, 95, departed this life peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook, Kan. RD and his twin sister, Norma Dee, were born on the family farm in rural Melvern, Kan., on Dec. 20, 1927, to Verlin and Miriam (Criss) Patterson. His parents and his five siblings preceded him in death.

RD spent most of his life in the Melvern community. He graduated in 1945 from Melvern Rural School and married his high school sweetheart, Norma Nadine Arb, on Aug. 3, 1949, in Lyndon, Kan. Soon after, RD began working as a field representative for Kansas Mutual. After a few years he decided to work for Upland Mutual as field representative and adjustor. He traveled throughout the state of Kansas, visiting agencies and appointing new agents with this job. He retired from Upland Mutual in 1992. Upon retiring, he enjoyed morning coffee with his Melvern friends, gardening, working at the family house, tending the farms around Melvern that he and Norma owned, as well as being grandpa and having the opportunity to watch the grandchildren grow up while taking part in their activities.

During his lifetime in the Melvern community, he was very civic oriented. He was the mayor of Melvern in the late 1960s, participated in the Melvern Community Pride organization American Legion Post 317, and served on the Osage County Zoning Board, in addition to many other organizations.
