Shirley Ann Earhart, Osage City: Dec. 7, 2023

Osage City, Kan. – Shirley Ann Earhart, of Osage City, Kan., passed away Dec. 7, 2023, at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Mo. She was born April 11, in Sabetha, Kan., to Bernard and Eleanor Walden.

Shirley spent her early years in Haddam, Kan. Her family moved to Richland, Kan., when she was in sixth grade. She attended Matney School, and later graduated from Berryton High School, Berryton, Kan. Shirley attended the University of Kansas for one year before meeting her future husband, John Earhart.

Shirley worked at the Air Force Supply Depot at Forbes Field in Topeka, Kan. She also worked several years at the Journal Free Press, Osage City.

Shirley and John were married Aug. 8, 1953, at the EUB Church, at Richland. Shirley and John lived in Osage City since the time of their marriage. They were married for 65 years.

Shirley was librarian of the Osage City Public Library for 28 years, and was instrumental in getting the approval of the voters for building the new public library that opened in 2000. She was also a member of the Northeast Kansas Library Association. Shirley was a member of PEO Chapter IQ, and a member of Sorosis Club. She also was very active with the Kansas State Firefighters Association with her husband. She was also active in the women’s auxiliary group of the KSFFA. She would often travel around the state to help John with running fire schools.

Shirley loved reading and instilled her love of reading in her grandchildren and great-grandchild. She was also an avid watch collector. She had more than 200 unique watches in her collection. She would often take them to the local school to share with the students. Her favorite kind to collect were advertising or brand watches. She saved UPCs and proof of purchases to send in for many of them. Shirley was also an avid KU sports fan and loved watching and listening to as many games as she could.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, John Earhart; parents, Bernard and Eleanor (Williams) Walden; a sister, Frances (Walden) Rake; a brother, Robert “Bob” Walden; and a step-granddaughter, Nina Mierzejewski.

She is survived by her sons, Gordon Earhart (Vicki) and Darrin Earhart (Valerie); two grandchildren, Chelsea Earhart Escobar (Santiago) and Collin Earhart (Alycia); a step-grandson, Jonathan Mierzejewski; a great-grandchild, Olive Earhart; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church, 219 S. Sixth St., Osage City. Inurnment will follow in Osage City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. before the service at the church. To honor Shirley, please wear bright colors or fun patterns.

    A dear lady and dedicated librarian. I enjoyed working with her as a visiting reader for the preschoolers.
    I moved away from OC in 1990 but had many fond memories of the people of that community. Shirley is a sweet memory.
