Venita Young, 96, Overbrook: April 17, 1927 – March 31, 2024

OVERBROOK, Kan. – Venita Faye (Dunn) Young, 96, of Overbrook, Kan., and formerly of Burlingame, Kan., passed away Sunday, March 31, 2024, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was born April 17, 1927, in Fostoria, Kan., the daughter of Henry Dunn and Hazel (Peavler) Dunn.

Venita grew up and attended schools in Burlingame, graduating with the Burlingame High School class of 1945.

She was united in marriage to Bobby G. Young, Feb. 14, 1948, at Federated Church, Burlingame. They shared more than 50 years of marriage before her husband’s passing Oct. 22, 1998.

Venita worked as a receptionist for Santa Fe Railroad, Topeka, Kan., USD 454 Burlingame, Cotton-O’Neil Lab, Topeka, and Dr. Stan Hornbaker and Dr. Kevin Sundbye, in Carbondale, Kan. She resided in Burlingame until moving to the Brookside Retirement Community in July 2020.

She was a member of TNT Club, was very artistic, and loved growing flowers in her garden. She also was a fabulous cook.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Hazel Dunn; and a sister, Ruth Watkinson Tosone.

Surviving family includes a son, Tom Young and his wife, Donna, Burlingame; daughter, Susie Whalen and her husband, Kurt, Lawrence, Kan.; two grandsons, Matt Young and wife, Becky, Burlingame, and Jared Whalen and wife, Sarah, Olathe, Kan.; two granddaughters, Lindsey Ewing, Ft. Meyers, Fla., and Aindrea Scott and husband, Dr. Derek Scott, of Woodbury, Minn.; four great-grandchildren, Hannah and Evan and Ainsley and Gwen; and many nieces.

Cremation is planned. Inurnment will follow at the Burlingame Cemetery, Burlingame, at a later date.
