Meet a local 4-Her: Gentry McNally, animal caretaker, productive gardener

Gentry McNally leads his heifer Vanessa at the Overbrook fairgrounds.

Hi, my name is Gentry McNally and I am currently wrapping up my first year in 4-H as a Melvern Jr. Highline 4-H Club member. This year I enrolled in beef foods and nutrition, and horticulture projects. I have an older brother and sister who helped me learn a lot this year, in addition to my parents and other older 4-H members and volunteers.

For my projects this year I showed my heifer, Vanessa. I spent many hours with her in the barn and learned a lot from her gentle and mild personality. She was a perfect first year project for me and I cannot wait to go see her in the pasture and be able to see her baby once it is born next spring.

For foods and nutrition, I helped in the kitchen throughout the year and made banana bars that I got a purple on at the fair. I worked with my older brother in the garden, where we grew tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, okra, and potatoes.

The past year went by fast but I am looking forward to next year and working on my projects.
