The Burlingame High School Lady Bearcats volleyball team scored a win and a loss in matches against Marais des Cygnes Valley and Olpe, Sept. 24 at Melvern.
In the Olpe match, the Lady Bearcats lost in two sets with scores of 23-25 and 17-25
In the MdCV match, Burlingame lost the first set 24-26, but won the match with two sets scoring 25-21 in each.
BHS coach Chelsi Gardner commented: “Against Olpe, we lacked the fire we need to beat a competitive like them. When we came out against MdCV we were still slow to start, but we picked it up in the second and third matches which I was pleased with. We were much more aggressive offensively, and defensively.
“Karli Zabokrtsky had a great night offensively and I was really pleased with her. We had a great defensive effort by Taylor Carson as well. Ashton Dorr and Hayley Lewis are continuing to be our leaders and lead our team. Overall, our team is continuing to improve and mesh.
“We are still a bit wobbly at times, but we are having some great shining moments! I am sure we will continue to improve and surprise some people by the end of the season.”
Lady Bearcats vs. Hartford, Madison
This week, on Oct. 1, the Lady Bearcats gained momentum, winning against Hartford and Madison, playing at Harford.
The Lady Bearcats scored 25-19 and 25-11 to win the match against Hartford. They followed that with a win over Madison scoring 25-23 and 25-17.
BHS coach Chelsi Gardner commented: “We started the night off slow against Hartford in the first set, but quickly picked up the pace the second set against Hartford, and we were solid against Madison!
“We played with minimal mistakes last night and were solid defensively, minimizing silly errors. It was nice to see the girls come out and play hard after a shaky week last week. I am proud of the progress we are making and the improvements I am seeing.”
The ladies next take on Waverly at 5 p.m. Oct. 8, at Waverly.
