In addition to soldiers and airmen of the Kansas National Guard, the federal shutdown is affecting a number of civilian employees of the Adjutant General’s Department who are federally funded. A total of 263 federally funded state employees will be furloughed.

One hundred thirty-nine of these employees support the federal functions of the Kansas Adjutant General’s Department and Kansas National Guard. They generally fulfill supply, clerical, facility maintenance and repair, and other support functions and are located primarily in Topeka, Wichita and Salina.

One hundred twenty-four of the state employees being furloughed work at the Regional Sustainment Maintenance Sites at Fort Riley and in Salina. The RSMS program refurbishes military equipment for the Department of Defense. These workers are state employees who are paid by a cooperative agreement financed by the federal government.

“We regret having to furlough these employees and will do what we can to help them get through this,” said Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, the adjutant general.

A total of 772 Kansas National Guardsmen have been placed on furlough due to the federal shutdown. This figure includes 417 Army National Guard soldiers from across the state, 209 airmen from the 190th Air Refueling Wing in Topeka and 146 airmen at the 184th Intelligence Wing in Wichita.
