Osage County and northeast Kansas are in red flag warning as of 10 a.m. today, Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, due to predicted low humidity and high winds. The warning is in effect through 8 p.m. today and covers most of northeast, north central, and east central Kansas.
The National Weather Service has forecast northwest winds sustained at 12 to 22 mph with gusts up to 35 mph for the area north of Interstate 70, and gusts between 25 and 30 mph south of Interstate 70. Humidity could be as low as 19 percent.
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Any fire that develops could catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
