Osage County in red flag warning area Friday

The National Weather Service Topeka has issued a red flag warning for all of northeast Kansas, including Osage County, for Friday, March 14, 2025. The red flag warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, due to very gusty winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels across the entire area.

The warning area covering Osage County also includes Clay, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Jefferson, Ottawa, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, Franklin, Coffey, and Anderson counties.

Winds are forecast to be southerly at 30-40 mph Friday, with gusts up to 55 mph. Relative humidity is predicted to be as low as 18 percent, which means any fire that develops could catch and spread quickly. All outdoor burning should be postponed until conditions improve.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
