Osage County under burn ban due to high fire danger across Kansas

Osage County Emergency Management has issued a burn ban today, Monday, March 17, 2025, for the entire county due to high wind gusts and warm temperatures.

Osage County and northeast Kansas are under a National Weather Service issued red flag warning today until 8 p.m. and will remain under a fire weather watch from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. The warning is in effect due to gusty southwest winds and low relative humidity expected in north central, northeast and east central Kansas.

The National Weather Service at Topeka has forecast today will be sunny, with a high near 77, and breezy, with a southwest wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 55, south wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

The red flag warning covering Osage County also includes Republic, Washington, Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Cloud, Clay, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Jefferson, Ottawa, Dickinson, Geary, Morris,  Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, Franklin, Coffey, and Anderson counties.

During Osage County’s burn ban, no outside burning is allowed and all county burn permits are suspended. A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. During periods of high fire danger, fires can start quickly, spread furiously and burn intensely. All fires are potentially serious. All outdoor burning should be avoided.
