High temps, windy conditions fire up Tuesday’s burn ban in Osage County

Osage County Emergency Management has issued a burn ban for today, Tuesday, March 10, 2026, due to forecast warm, dry and breezy conditions that are expected to result in high fire danger across the area this afternoon.

National Weather Service at Topeka has forecast today’s weather in Osage County as sunny, with a high near 84, and breezy, with a south wind 10 to 20 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph.

NWS is advising there is a risk for severe thunderstorms late this afternoon into this evening primarily across areas along and southeast of the Interstate 35 corridor. Main concerns with the storms are large hail and damaging winds. Parts of east central Kansas that have recently seen heavy rain and flooding could see renewed flooding from the heavy rainfall overnight tonight.

A NWS advisory indicates that after the storms roll through Wednesday, elevated fire weather conditions are expected to continue across the area Thursday. Storm spotters are encouraged to report damaging hail or wind and rainfall amounts over one inch to National Weather Service in Topeka.

Osage County’s burn ban prohibits all outdoor burning in unincorporated areas of the county and will be in effect until rescinded. For more information about the burn ban, contact Osage County Emergency Management at 785-828-3323 or the Osage County Sheriff’s Office at 785-828-3121.
