On Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, Marais des Cygnes Valley Junior High and High School student councils came together to host a benefit dinner in honor of Steve Taylor, a respected teacher and coach courageously battling cancer.

Held in Melvern’s commons area alongside the home basketball game against West Franklin, the event attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd of students, parents, faculty, and community members, all united in their support for Mr. Taylor and his loved ones.

Organized and served by dedicated members of both student councils, the dinner featured a delicious pulled-pork meal.

“It means a lot to see so many people come out and support someone who has given so much to our school,” said Akyra Traver, MdCVHS StuCo president. “Mr. Taylor has always been there for us, and tonight we’re here for him.”

All proceeds from the evening will go directly toward Mr. Taylor’s medical expenses. Organizers expressed deep gratitude to the attendees and volunteers who contributed to the event’s success.

Mr. Taylor attended the event with his family, sharing smiles and taking pictures with both the MdCV boys and girls basketball teams.

StuCo members hope the benefit dinner will inspire ongoing support for those facing challenges and serve as a reminder of the strength found in the community.
